knitting in the round requires circular needles, but straight needles can also help you knit in the round (it just depends on your pattern and it might be a bit difficult). you just knit (there are no special knitting), by casting on stitches, but keep track of your stitches to mark the beginning and end of a row (by using a different colored yarn. you do this by after casting on your stitches, place a different colored yarn-be sure to make a loophole to mark the end of the row)After you've reached the end of a row, keep on knitting based on your pattern.

I'm sure that there are good books and websites that show you how to do this.

You need either a circular needle of an appropriate length for your project, or a set of double pointed needles. You cast on your stitches (cast onto 3 of a set of 4 double points, or 4 of a set of 5 needles, the last needles is the one you knit with), lay the needle(s) out flat on the table to make sure that the stitches are all on the same side of the needle(s) with no twists. Bring the needle or end with the last stitch around to the needle or end with the first stitch, and slip the first stitch onto the last stitch's needle, then pull the last stitch over the first stitch as if you are going to cast off, but put it back on the needle the first stitch came from (this joins the work with no twists and no *jog* where the knitting begins. Put a marker between these two stitches to mark the start of the round and then just knit.

In the round you do not turn and, unless you are doing it for the stitch effect, you don't purl. Just plain knit stitches in the round make stockinette stitch. To get garter stitch in the round you actually have to knit one round and then purl one round.

Here's the website that helped me. It just takes a bit of practice and either circular needles or a set of 4-5 double pointed needles.
    For circular needles http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=105
    For double points http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=104

Good Luck and have fun :)
