the "lead" in pencils is not lead at all, but graphite.

A little. Honestly, you're not going to see a really big difference until you get to your 4B or 6B. Use whatever is most comfortable for you and whatever gives you the line quality you want.

The pencil darkness (from left to right) go from the
    lightest to the darkest…… 4H 2H HB 2B 4B
I remember because the H on the left side suggests HARD lead,
so it will draw very light (4H is lighter than 2H).
The HB is considered the 'middle' darkness (like a no. 2 pencil).
The B suggests BLACK, so 4B is darker than 2B.

it's not a matter of more or less lead, it's whether the lead is hard or soft. an HB pencil is comparable to a No. 2 pencil. the larger the number with an "H" behind it, the harder the graphite and the lighter the drawing will be. the larger the number with a "B" behind it, the softer the graphite which makes a darker drawing. you have to expiriment with these in order to achieve tones and values that will suit your drawing, sometimes a layer of a "B" pencil with a "H" pencil on top will make a darker image than putting a softer graphite on the first layer. it'll take time and practice, and using the right paper will affect the way that some pencils, nomatter what the density of graphite will look like. hope that helps!
